Brüssel October 2022: 11. to 12. October this year’s EBAN Summit took place.
Hundreds of investors, selected start-ups, policy makers and companies met in mid-October in Brussels at the European Angel Investment Summit. The aim of the summit was to put business angels in the spotlight and highlight how they often take risks through their activities, but provide economic momentum through their early investments in innovation.
Gateway Ventures is proud to be part of the European Business Angel Network, and so our CEO Markus Kainz, Head of Partnerhips Robert Stammen and our Portfolio-Manager Stefano Gentili made their way to Brussels to meet the whole spectrum of the European investors scene in person after long months without any major events.
The first day started with an inspiring speech by former Italian Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni on the global economic situation, the uncertainty of the financial markets, Ukraine conflict and numerous other crises. The innovations especially start-ups are driving show themselves to be the force that can counteract all of this. The promotion of intercultural cooperation also strengthens economic growth, which is the only way to compete with other nations such as China or America.
We are proud that despite different cultures, countries and languages, cross-border cooperation is not a problem, and that this is reflected in the entire business angel scene in line with the European idea that “we are all Europeans”.
Our highlights were clearly the inspiring conversations we had with other business angels and start-ups. Promoting diversity in the start-up scene also increases the chances of success. Especially the inspiring conversations with the founders, Lisa-Marie Fassl and Tina Dreimann, remained in the memory of our CEO Markus Kainz.
Robert, our new Head of Partnerships, had great conversations with other business angel networks. Together, we now want to expand our pooling solution and thus connect investors together and further strengthen and expand our community.
Our Portfolio Manager Stefano looked at the Eban from a dealflow perspective and had an exciting exchange with Green Tech and Climate Tech founders. Impact start-ups in particular have great potential in Europe if business angels and politicians work together to create a solid ecosystem that enables their sustainable growth.
In addition to the face-to-face meetings, however, there were also a number of pitching events.
Interstellar Lab was the winner of the “ScaleUp of the Month” competition, in which 6 promising start-ups participated. Interstellar Lab develops sustainable growing solutions for plants on Earth and paves the way for regenerative life support in space. An important step towards sustainability and resource conservation.
Of course, there was also a whole range of side events, such as chips, chocolate and beer, which, in addition to the opportunity for networking, also brought the special features of Belgian cuisine closer.
Many thanks to Jacopo Losso and Keti Chikhladze for the great realisation of this event. We are grateful to be part of this valuable network that promotes not only start-ups but also the European idea of cross-border cooperation, and we are already looking forward to next year!
